A beautifully iced wedding cake can be a wonderful focal point at a wedding reception and the cake-cutting ceremony provides a great photo opportunity, but a premium quality cake can cost hundreds of dollars. In these hard economic times, is there a cheaper way to have your cake and eat it?
The Fake Cake
Some couples hire a "fake cake" from a company such as cakerental.com. The cake layers are made from foam and are iced with real icing to look like a real wedding cake. The couple can have a real cake on the top tier to cut into during the cake-cutting ceremony, or place a piece of real cake into the special slotted section included in some of the cakes.
The cake that is served for guests to take home can be a cheaper iced cake from a supermarket or wholesaler. Supermarket iced cakes can taste just as good as specially made wedding cakes but cost a lot less.
Wedding Cupcakes
Another idea that is gaining popularity is the use of cupcakes, tastefully decorated in the wedding colour scheme and placed on a stand, to form a stunning centrepiece on the top table at the reception. Fresh flowers can be incorporated into the display to create a really beautiful effect.
Many cupcake tower designs incorporate a slightly larger cake on the top to use during the cake-cutting ceremony. Cupcakes are a great idea, as they can be made at home quite easily, or professionally made for the fraction of the price of a real wedding cake. Besides, everyone loves cupcakes, and this is sure to be a great focal point that will have the attention of all the wedding guests!
Plain Cake Wrapped in Pretty Fabric
Another clever way of presenting wedding cake is to wrap it in pretty fabric and ribbon. Plain pieces of cake can be wrapped in a layer of foil and then wrapped in sheer fabric, such as organza and tied with ribbon or streamers. These individual pieces can then be placed in pretty baskets, decorated with ribbons and flowers and handed out at the reception by the bridesmaids and flower girls.
This method is probably the cheapest, as you could make the cake yourself and it does not need to be iced, but the fabric parcels look beautiful, and attention to detail can make them look quite expensive and exclusive.
